[WATCH] Love is for everyone

Perhaps the Singaporean female lemurs found the male Spanish lemurs' accents irresistible? Read the love story of the foreign lemurs here.

There was a tour guide in a zoo who described their lemur pen as proof that love has no boundaries.

He said the zoo bought 20 female lemurs from a merchant in Singapore early in January 2016. At first the lemurs seemed fine, but after a month he realised they had fallen into a depressed state.

Soon they refused to eat and started to fight among each other. He decided the zoo needed to buy more lemurs, but this time they needed to find males.

A week after the zookeeper made the suggestion to the owners of the zoo, the new male recruits arrived, but there was one problem: the male lemurs were from Spain and could therefore only ‘speak’ and ‘understand’ Spanish.

“But both the Spanish and Singaporean lemurs knew how to love, and thus they overcame the language barrier by simply caring for each other,” the zookeeper said.

The lemurs became a family even though they couldn’t understand each other at first. They had the ability to express kindness, nurturing and ultimately love for each other. The zoo had a world record number of lemur babies born a few months after the males and females were placed in the same pen. Perhaps the Singaporean females found the Spanish lemurs’ accents irresistible? The zoo now has over 100 lemurs, one year after the males arrived.

Love is for everyone; for those who speak English and for those who prefer Afrikaans. It is for tough as nails bikers and even for small children expressing their love for their parents.

The News took to the streets of Krugersdorp and visited a few local schools to find out what Krugersdorpers thought about love.
