In many regards Krugersdorp can count itself lucky where roads are concerned.
Although all roads in all towns in South Africa are subject to deterioration, with potholes and uneven surfaces, the Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) usually responds quite speedily to fill holes and on an annual basis implement its planned Roads Rehabilitation and Resurfacing Project.
The MCLM Roads and Transport Division started repairs on Voortrekker Road (one of the most traversed roads in Krugersdorp) in mid-November last year, taking a break over the festive period and continuing in mid-January with plans to finish the project by June of 2022.
The project will include the resurfacing, maintenance and rehabilitation of the following roads:
• Chamdor Road, where work will be carried out from Leratong Hospital to the Voortrekker/ Frederick Cooper/ Barret Road intersection
• Barret Road from Voortrekker Road to the Luipaardsvlei train station and taxi rank
• Luipaard Street from Coronation Street through Paardekraal Road until Mill Road in Boltonia
• On Voortrekker Road, work will be carried out on the section of the road/ intersection and part of the service road where Voortrekker and Shannon Roads cross
While Voortrekker and its service road received some much-needed refurbishment, MCLM agreed to extend a helping hand to a local business.
Monument Liquor Warehouse has struggled for years with inadequate parking during busy periods, with many bakkies and SUVs climbing the large curb to park on the median strip across from the business. Other than the hassle that came with this and the traffic jams it sometimes caused on the service road, customers’ safety also became a concern.
To solve this problem, Monument Liquor owner Tiago de Canha applied to the municipality for a permanent parking space on this median. They agreed to provide 15 parking spaces but Monument Liquor had to cover the costs.
Tiago explained that, “The service road has been a disgrace since I started here in 2003. They did the roads for the town, which are beautiful. I applied to the council for the parking and they approved it. It was quite a procedure.
Everything had to be built according to the plans, which I had my engineer draw up, like the ballards to stop vehicles from crossing over into Voortrekker. I just want to give a big thank you to the council for improving the look of the road and helping the business.
