Refuse collection clarity: What to throw away, or not …

The municipality provided clarity on the recent refuse collection confusion in the community.

As Mogale City Local Municipality’s (MCLM) waste management services continue to encourage recycling and protecting municipal infrastructure through weight control, they remind residents of the guidelines that support these efforts.

MCLM communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu provided clarity and said they only collect general household waste.

Any refuse bin containing prohibited waste will be left behind with a yellow sticker indicating the reason for non-collection,” she addressed.

Mahlangu added the following items are prohibited and will not be collected where they must be disposed of at your nearest landfill site:

• Garden waste: Soil, grass, branches and tree stumps
• Building rubble: Bricks, sand, concrete and tiles
• Plumbing fixtures: Toilets, basins and bathtubs
• Hazardous waste: Paint, chemicals, batteries and fluorescent bulbs
• Electronic waste: TVs, computers and appliances (these can be disposed of at designated E-Waste collection points at Luipaardsvlei, Magaliesburg Town Hall and Cradlestone Mall)

“These items will not be collected to prevent overloading bin lifters on our trucks, which can cause mechanical damage and lead to service disruptions,” she explained.

She concluded that, additionally, waste services are conducting a bin audit, where if a property has two bins, but is only charged for one, the second bin will be added to the account and billed accordingly.
