Mogale City outlines smart meter project while locals voice opinions
Audits for smart prepaid meters are currently underway. Here’s how the process works, who conducts the checks, and what residents are saying about it.
Krugersdorp residents have voiced their opinions on the municipality’s ongoing Prepaid Smart Electricity Metering Project audits, while the Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) explained how the system works and the purpose of the audits.
Resident Nathalia Schulz said MCLM could introduce various initiatives, but unless its billing and accounts department improves, errors and poor service will persist.

Another resident, Amanda Slabbert, raised concerns about signal problems with the meters and ongoing billing issues.
MCLM communication officer Refilwe Mahlangu addressed frequently asked questions regarding the audits:
What is the project?
Smart and advanced meters are replacing existing prepaid meters. These devices help residents track their electricity consumption, saving costs and improving energy management. The project does not include postpaid meters.
What are smart meters, and how do they work?
They are digital devices that measure and monitor electricity accurately.
When did the audits start?
The roll-out began in July, with neighbourhoods phased in systematically. Specific wards and dates are shared via social media.

Who audits the meters?
Only MCLM’s authorised auditors carry out the audits.
Is it free?
Yes. Residents will not be charged, as the initiative is funded by the National Government to improve municipal infrastructure.
Do you need to be at home?
Yes. Someone must be present to provide access to the existing meter. If not, auditors will arrange another time.
How can residents verify an auditor’s identity?
Auditors carry municipal ID badges, wear official uniforms, and have authorisation letters from MCLM.
