A ceremony to honour blood donors

SANBS held an award ceremony and blood drive at Silverstar Casino.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) hosted an awards ceremony at Silverstar Casino to recognise those who met certain milestones in their blood donation journey.

In addition, the ceremony was to educate the public on how important blood donation is.

SANBS provides an essential service within South Africa and is rated among the best in the world in the provision of blood and blood products, as well as research and training. Furthermore, SANBS aims to collect an average of 3 000 units of blood every day, nationally. It is through planned, sustainable blood drives at companies, organisations, and institutions that they can achieve this collection target.

SANBS’ blood drives are used by many companies as a Corporate Social Investment activity to show that they are actively involved in impacting the lives of South Africans. Each blood drive also has several benefits in the long run.

Thapelo Nokoane was the host of the awards.

SANBS offers education for staff on safe lifestyles and requirements to qualify to be a blood donor and the Donor Educator covers important information such as sexually transmitted diseases.

The awards are held annually and every year.

According to SANBS donor relations practitioner Katrina Makamo, donors who donated 25 or more units, with some even donating more than 425 units, each received a certificate.

Many guest speakers such as Boitumelo Sikwane also provided some insight about how vital blood donation is as her newborn child was born prematurely and needed to have a blood transfusion.
