From Lesotho to Krugersdorp: Mission complete!

A group of students overcame harsh conditions and a long walk while inspiring communities along the way.

A team of 14 university students who took part in a walk from Lesotho to Krugersdorp have finally completed their mission.

The journey began in Lesotho on June 26 and the group arrived in Krugersdorp on July 5. Upon their arrival, the group was escorted from Roodepoort to Krugersdorp by Mogale City Public Safety. They were welcomed by Mogale City Executive Mayor Danny Thupane, who also joined the walkers on their way to Krugersdorp Town Hall.

The walk aimed to raise awareness and R24 million for student needs and community projects.

“The first walk was from Maseru to Thaba Nchu, we arrived in the afternoon and did a career exhibition as we aimed to do career exhibitions at every stop that we made, different businesses and people supported us by providing us with things like T-shirts, and banners,” explained pastor and founder of Solutionary Walk, Tona Moroke.

According to Tona, the walk from Bloemfontein to Welkom was the longest and most difficult since it was raining along the way and they ended up not doing a career expo at their next stop, Kroonstad, because they were late.

The North West University gave the walkers gifts after the career expo and shared that some of their students will join in the walk next year. The team walked 20km per day and it took them 10 days to complete the walk.

“The walk was a difficult one, we had challenges when it came to the roads that we were walking on so we had to wear face masks and balaclavas. We received a great reception from Lesotho, the people in Maseru were supportive and the taxi drivers escorted us. Bloemfontein and Free State were also great,” Mogale’s Youth Mayor, Lesego Lehaha expressed.

Limpho Natsoane shared that the walk was physically difficult but emotionally easy because they had to constantly remind themselves that they were doing this for a good cause.

“The career expos that we had were a success and what I loved was that we were able to reach communities that are seldom reached, especially the ones in the rural areas in Lesotho,” she further elaborated.
