Roadworks on Beyers Naudé Drive prompt warnings after crashes
Two crashes have been reported on Beyers Naudé Drive as drivers fail to slow down for construction safety measures.
Beyers Naudé Drive is currently undergoing much-needed upgrades, and motorists are advised to drive with caution in the affected area.
Councillor Shenan Cochrane said that reduced speed limits have been implemented along sections of the road where major construction work is taking place. The speed limits have been lowered from 60 km/h to 40 km/h and then to 20 km/h. Warning signs have also been installed to alert drivers.

“Despite these measures, some motorists continue to speed, which puts construction workers and other road users at risk,” she explained. Because drivers have been ignoring the reduced speed limits and failing to stop when flagmen halt traffic, small speed humps and rumble strips have been installed on the road.
However, Cochrane warned that drivers need to be especially careful when approaching these humps.
She added that several crashes have occurred because motorists were speeding and only noticed the humps too late, causing them to brake suddenly. This has resulted in vehicles behind them colliding into the back of their cars.
“These speed reduction measures were introduced specifically to protect the public and construction vehicles, and to prevent accidents and fatalities. Unfortunately, two crashes have occurred because motorists did not see the warning signs and slammed on their brakes at the speed humps. We have raised an enquiry with Provincial Roads and the contractors, and also conducted a site visit today, where we confirmed that sufficient signage is in place,” she added.

Motorists are urged to slow down while travelling on Beyers Naudé Drive until the work is completed, expect possible delays, and consider using alternative routes during peak traffic times.
