According to school principal Ann Owgan, serviam is a Latin phrase meaning “I will serve”.
It is a foundational motto of servant leadership and humility, frequently associated with St Michael the Archangel’s vow of obedience, in contrast to the rebellion of non serviam, meaning “I will not serve”.
Locally, it is the core motto of Ursuline schools such as Brescia House School in Randburg and St Ursula’s, representing a daily commitment to community upliftment and charity.
The donated parcels contain non-perishable food items and toiletries that will be distributed to the Tower of Life Shelter and other community organisations in town.
Beyond its religious roots, Serviam is widely used today to describe a lifestyle or philosophy of servant leadership. It emphasises placing the needs of others before one’s own through volunteering, charity, civic responsibility and dedication to improving communities and supporting vulnerable people.
