Local paddlers do well in Dusi seeding race

The river race was tough in accordance with requirements for qualifying for the FNB Dusi.

Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) hosted the Tops Spar Dusi seeding race on Sunday 11 December on Gauteng’s Klip River, from Daleside to Meyerton, with good forgiving water levels after recent rain storms. It was the final river race of 2016.

Richard Daws and Eric Browne from Noordheuwel enjoyed the opportunity to improve their fitness and endurance at this seeding race, finishing the tough 33km race in three hours and one minute.

Sibonelo Khwela from Natal – in the Eurosteel racing team – who is one of the most competitive river paddlers in SA, was sponsored to participate in the race to enable him to gain the competition status he needed to make sure he achieved front row Dusi seeding.

It was of course no surprise that, despite his lack of familiarity with the Klip River, he managed to win the race in two hours 12 minutes.

The river race was tough, in accordance with requirements for qualifying for the FNB Dusi, and included a couple of 2km portages, which enabled participants to fulfill the criteria for entry into the world’s most infamous endurance canoe race.
