X-stream BMXing in the Cradle

At about 10am the earth started to heat up, not just because of the sun finally peeping through the clouds, but also because of the enthusiasm and talent on the tracks.

Cradle BMX Cycling Club hosted the second leg of the Gauteng BMX Cycling series at the X-Stream Bike and Adventure Park in the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve on Sunday, 26 March, and boy … was it fun!

The talented cyclists gave it their all. Some of the ramps are situated in such a way that taking photos from a particular angle makes it seems as if the cyclists are jumping over the elephant statue that is located inside the nature reserve’s gate.

Racers took to the tracks even before the races started. They practiced their gate starts, familiarised themselves with all the ramps and weighed up their opponents.

Even the little ones, aged between four and seven years old, made sure they were familiar with the track’s turns, jumps and surface.

The morning started off cool and cloudy, but the weather did not seem to bother the cyclists at all. After about 10am, the clouds started to clear and the earth began to heat up – not just because of the sun finally pouring down on the earth, but also because of the enthusiasm and talent on the tracks.

The large track at the park is a world-class track with jumps, bends and the perfect starting gate. The first downhill increases the cyclists’ speeds to more than 50km/h which gives them the best starting platform.

In the distance, a large herd of wildebeest grazed peacefully, while the racers battled it out on the track.

“An all-round great day of BMX racing,” said Chris van der Merwe, owner of the park. “From Dinky Dudes to Elites, the riders were in top form, and offered spectators excitement in each race. Racing was fast and furious.”
