Paddlers take on novice race

It was an easy and short river race, which they finished in fourth place.

Richard Daws and Eric Brown, two local paddlers, who have been resting since they finished the extremely tough Dusi canoe marathon in February, have decided it is time to kick back into training.

Their plan of action was to take on the novice race, the Akzonobel River Race, on Saturday 6 May. It was an easy and short river race, which they finished in fourth place in the veteran age category, in a time of 1 hour 45 minutes.

Watuni Canoe Club in Vanderbijlpark hosted the race as the first race of the new river season which began in April. The river season peaks at the end of March with the best racing period beginning in December. The rainy season ensures that the rivers are pumping huge amounts of water and the rapids are challenging and exciting. In winter, the river water levels are lower, sluggish and the rapids manageable so they are ideal for the new learner paddlers to get up and running, gaining skill, ability and making mistakes under easier situations.

The race started in Henley-on-Klip at The Makery venue and finished in Meyerton – a distance of 20km with numerous rapids and obstacles to overcome.
