KHS hosts 20th Best of the West Festival

KHS has released the results for the Best of the West Festival for high schools recently.

With dozens of schools competing at Krugersdorp High School’s (KHS) Best of the West festival for high schools from March 6 to 7, the school has released the results and highlighted what the event is all about.

KHS principal Ivan Baley welcomed the community to the festival and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to host the tournament.

Festival director Cassandra Bergé said the festival has, for two decades, brought schools together on KHS grounds to compete in netball and hockey.

“This was a profoundly nostalgic weekend, as it marked the 20th anniversary as well.

Back in 2006, I was a wide-eyed Grade Nine learner eagerly participating in the festival to raise funds for a tour in England,” she said.

She shared some fun facts about the festival, including that in its early years, both primary and high schools competed over the same weekend, creating a vibrant and bustling atmosphere.

“As the festival grew in popularity, it became necessary to split it over two weekends due to the increasing number of participants,” she explained.

Over the two weekends, more than 200 teams converged on the KHS campus, translating to around 2 000 players.

During the primary school weekend, about 232 thrilling games took place on our courts, while the high school weekend featured 234 exciting matches,” she said.

And despite occasional rain, the weather did not dampen the competitive spirit or excitement on the courts.

Midstream, KHS and Norkem Park shine

Over the two days, several schools stood out for their attacking flair, disciplined defence, and strong teamwork, delivering some of the most impressive performances of the festival. Among them were Midstream High School, KHS, Norkem Park, Crawford Lonehill, Potch Girls and Alma Mater.

Midstream High School proved dominant across the U14A and U19A divisions, impressing with fast, clinical play and sharp finishing. Their U19A side secured the biggest win of the festival, defeating Westonaria 32–6.

The home team, KHS, excelled in multiple divisions, particularly U15A and U19A, drawing energy from strong home support and executing disciplined game plans. Norkem Park showcased their trademark resilience, with their U19B and U14A teams displaying grit in closely contested matches, including a hard-fought 11–6 victory over Potch Girls.

Jannas first team shines at Best of the West Tournament

Hoërskool Jan Viljoen High School’s first netball team (U19A) girls had an exciting and action-packed weekend at the tournament. Throughout the competition, the team showed great resilience, determination and team spirit, facing strong opponents with courage and focus.

The tournament brought a mixed bag of results (wins and losses), but every match was full of energy and excitement. The girls fought for every ball and supported each other both on and off the court, demonstrating true sportsmanship and commitment.
