Mopani soccer talent search, unearths future starts

Aspiring soccer players from across the country showcased their talent at the Mopani soccer talent search held at the Nkowankowa Stadium on Saturday.

The fourth edition of the event recorded the highest number of participants ever with players from as far as KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng. The annual event was hosted by renowned soccer coach, Peace Khosa. He is the founder of Nkowankowa Barcelona Development Football Club and the current coach of Tzaneen United FC.

On Saturday Khosa was assisted by former Golden Arrows player, Frank Motebejane, to scout the players. Forget Mashele, a former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, and Bongani Kubayi, a Tzaneen United goalkeeper scouted aspiring goalkeepers. “The boys brought their A-game, they made it difficult for us to select,” says Khoza.

“We aimed to select 22 players, however, due to the many talented players on the day, we ended up choosing 30 players.” He says in July, the selected team will play against Polokwane City B and hopefully, some players will be picked up during the event. He also added that during the off-season, the selected players will play about three friendly games with professional teams such as Baroka FC to expose them to professional teams and enhance their soccer skills.

Despite this, Khosa says he is disappointed that the local soccer clubs in Nkowankowa did not bring their players to be part of the talent search. “How can a player come from KZN and no one child from Nkowankowa came.” “Coaches must understand that it is not about us, but the players, hopefully, next time we can do better,” he adds.

Khosa will lead another talent search at Malamulele on Saturday, June 14. He was requested by players from Malamulele to host the event, which will give local players exposure.
