Nkowa soccer title won in thrilling penalty shootout

Rich Gang emerged victorious in the Nkowankowa community games soccer final, defeating Dream Team in a nail-biting penalty shootout.

TZANEEN – The much-anticipated soccer final between Rich Gang and Dream Team at the Nkowankowa Community Games (NCG) delivered a nail-biting spectacle, culminating in a penalty shootout that secured Rich Gang’s victory.

The match was a tale of two halves, with Dream Team dominating the first half through superior ball possession but failing to capitalise on scoring opportunities.

The second half saw Rich Gang surge into action after coach Peace Khosa made strategic substitutions that resulted in a crucial goal.

Dream Team responded late in the game, with coach Akani introducing Theo ‘Bazuka’ Shiluvana, whose impact helped the team equalise in the dying minutes.

However, tempers flared as the match progressed, leading to Dream Team’s coach Akani receiving a red card from the referee.

The 1-1 scoreline at full-time pushed the game into a penalty shootout. Both teams displayed composure, but a decisive save by Rich Gang’s Melville Ndlovu sealed their victory.

Khosa praised his team’s preparation and resilience. “We knew Dream Team had great ball possession, but our confidence in the second half made the difference,” he said.

The annual NCG, held on December 27, unites the Nkowankowa community through sports.

The day featured a variety of events, including a fun run, netball matches, and a thrilling rugby game between Nkowankowa Rugby’s junior and senior teams. The seniors clinched a 33-26 victory in a match that showcased the juniors’ speed and the seniors’ experience.

Rugby head coach Bryan Mashigo commended both teams for their performances, calling the game exciting and balanced.

This year’s event saw the 10 000-capacity stadium filled, a milestone celebrated by Kiki Mboweni, speaking on behalf of event organisers Vuvekisi Holdings.

“For the first time in NCG’s 12-year history, we introduced a kids’ play zone, which was a massive hit. We aim to expand it further in 2025. A heartfelt thanks to our sponsors and the municipality for their unwavering support,” Mboweni said.
