Phalaborwa United secure the win in derby thriller

Phalaborwa United FC triumphed 1–0 over Selwana White Vultures in a heated ABC Motsepe League derby, advancing in the Nedbank Cup qualifiers.

PHALABORWA – The much-anticipated Safa Limpopo ABC Motsepe League derby between Phalaborwa United FC and their biggest rivals, Selwana White Vultures, turned into a thrilling showcase as United emerged victorious with a 1-0 win in the Nedbank Cup qualifiers on Saturday afternoon, October 11, at the Selwane Stadium.

The thrilling clash drew a large and energetic crowd, with fans filling the stands to witness one of the most intense local clashes of the season. Both teams entered the match determined to advance to the prestigious Nedbank Cup qualifiers.

The first half saw both sides locked in a tight contest, with strong defensive performances. However, United came back from the break with renewed energy.

Mokgalaka scores decisive second-half goal

Their persistence paid off in the 65th minute when Ayabonga “Magheba” Mokgalaka scored a superb goal, just five minutes after a Selwana White Vultures player was shown a red card.

Despite several attempts from the Vultures to find an equaliser, United’s defence held firm, with goalkeeper Roy Mashego producing a series of crucial saves to keep the clean sheet intact.

Following the match, Phalaborwa United’s recently appointed head coach, Tefu Mashamaite, said the win carried special meaning.

“This victory means a lot to us because I understand the culture and tradition of United. When I joined the club, the first thing I learned was how important this fixture is to the people of Phalaborwa. Vultures are a formidable team, and beating them was not easy.

“I am proud of how my players handled the pressure. Advancing in the Nedbank Cup will prove that we have a strong and capable team. I encourage our fans to support us as we showcase Phalaborwa’s football talent,” said Mashamaite.

He also extended his gratitude to the club’s leadership, players, and loyal supporters for their continued commitment and belief in the team.

With this victory, Phalaborwa United FC advances to the next stage of the Nedbank Cup qualifiers. The team is now set to face Nkowankowa Continental on Saturday, October 18, with the venue to be confirmed.
