How to apply sunscreen correctly this summer

Follow these four easy steps to apply sunscreen correctly and stay protected.

Knowing how to apply sunscreen correctly will help ensure that your skin is protected this summer.

Follow these simple steps to get it right.

1. Choose the right formula

The higher the Sun Protection Factor or SPF of your sunscreen the better. You should select at least an SPF 30 for best results. Lightweight formulas that are easy to apply and don’t leave your skin feeling greasy are a good choice.

2. Use the right amount

Applying too little sunscreen will reduce its effectiveness. You will need at least two tablespoons of sunscreen for your face, ears, and neck alone.

3. Let it sink in

Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you go into the sun. This will give it enough time to soak into your skin. Sunscreen should be applied to clean skin before you put on moisturiser or makeup.

4. Apply sunscreen often

Sunscreen starts wearing away as soon as it is exposed to the sun. Therefore, re-application is necessary. Re-apply sunscreen every two hours – especially when swimming.

The rule to remember is that the SPF multiplied by 10 is the number of minutes for which your sunscreen will remain effective. For example, SPF 25 will be effective for 250 minutes. But re-application every two hours is a prudent approach to take.
