Former ‘Backstage’, ‘Generations’ star Dini Nondumo named CEO of insurance brokerage

Once a familiar face on Backstage and Generations, Dini Nondumo has been appointed CEO of Durban-based Compendium Insurance Brokers. Here's how the actor became an insurance executive.

More than two decades after he first charmed viewers as nightclub manager Tendai on Backstage, Dinilesiswe “Dini” Nondumo has landed a very different lead role. The 49-year-old actor-turned-executive has been appointed chief executive officer of Compendium Insurance Brokers, effective 1 October 2026, according to reports by a handful of local business publications.

Born on 19 April 1977, Nondumo rose to national prominence in the early 2000s. After Backstage in 2002, he moved to SABC1’s Generations, where he played Vuyo Nogaba until 2005, according to TVSA. His other credits include Steven Mhlaba in the second season of Hard Copy, “Eyes” in Snitch, and smaller film roles in Beat the Drum, The Zulu Love Letter, King Otto and Blood Diamond. He also presented Selimathunzi and Shell Road to Fame, and hosted the Miss SA Teen pageant in 2002.

The quiet pivot into business

While many of his contemporaries stayed in entertainment, Nondumo built a second career in finance and insurance. He has held senior roles at Standard Bank Insurance, where he was head of commercial insurance as of late 2025, and at Land Bank Insurance Company, where he was executive manager of distribution and sales from 2015 to 2020.

He was also managing director of Dimaru, a Hollard Group Risk Select partner, and held leadership positions at OneCard Technologies. He is linked to the property investment company Motlalepula Investments and has reportedly served as Deputy Chairperson of the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sandton-Midrand region), according to Business Tech.

His qualifications include a BSocSc from UCT, a master of management in entrepreneurship from Wits Business School, and a higher certificate in short-term insurance from Milpark Business School.

What he’ll be doing at Compendium

Based in Durban, Nondumo will steer the brokerage’s growth, strategy and long-term planning.

For a generation that grew up with Tendai and Vuyo, this kind of feels like a satisfying plot twist where we get to see the guy who played the cool club manager now running a company.
