A price tag that won’t make your eyes water is also part of the appeal and if you want to impress, the highly lauded Rubaiyat is an artful Bourdeux-style blend that, like the four verse poems that inspired its name, is a real pleasure to swirl.
What makes the current Rubaiyat 2015 vintage special is how steeped it is in De Grendel’s tradition.
Rubaiyat was a dream of Sir David Graaff to produce a first-class Bordeaux-style red blend. The dream was realised in the spring of 2009 when the maiden 2006 vintage was released.

The current 2015 vintage is a thoughtful construction of only the finest grapes by cellar master Charles Hopkins. It consists of 70% cabernet sauvignon, 25% petit verdot, 4% merlot and 1% cabernet franc. The cabernet vineyards are in the Firgrove area, 6km from False Bay.
The grapes are selected from specific sites focusing on lower yields, the age of the vines and the type of soil.
The merlot, cab franc and petit verdot are from De Grendel and thrive in Cape coffee stone and light top soil with deep broken laterite.
The result is a perfect winter wine and again shows how 2015 releases from an assortment of estates are considered the best in years.
