Update: R500 bail for bestiality suspect

Bail of R500 was granted to the young man from Doornkop who was arrested for bestiality.

During his arrest on 23 January, the suspect lied about his age and told police that he is 17 years old. At first the plan was to take the case to children’s court. Shortly before his first appearance last Monday the court received the birth certificate from Home Affairs which showed that he is in fact 20 years of age.

Tshepo Utla is charged under the Sexual Offences Act for bestiality and under the Animal Protection Act for torturing of an animal. Bail was denied on Monday. Utla will most likely be charged with perjury too, because he lied about his age.

With the help of Legal Aid the case was brought before court on Tuesday and bail of R500 was granted.

• According to police they received a call from people in Doornkop who stated that they found a man next to a dead four month old puppy. The man allegedly still had the condom over his penis. The condom was sent to the police forensic department for DNA testing.
