Cell phone grabbed whilst talking

The Middelburg Police are warning residents to be extra vigilant when travelling through the central business district (CBD).

Captain Khanyisile Zwane says that contact crimes in the CBD remains a problem. A man’s phone was grabbed out of his hand whilst he was busy talking on it infront of Capitec Bank in OR Tambo Street.

In another incident an attempted hijacking case was opened when a man, armed with a hand gun, pulled open a car door at the Cowen Ntuli- and John Magagula robot. The victim, who wished to remain anonymous, managed to speed off before he could be overpowered.

Mariette Stapelberg posted on Facebook that someone tried to open her vehicle door whilst she was queuing at the KFC on the corner of Cowen Ntuli- and John Magagula Street.

Mrs. Stapelberg says that the man acted in a very calm manner. When he found that the doors were closed, he simply jumped off the drive-through ramp and disappeared into Cowen Ntuli Street through a pedestrian gate.

“I would never have thought that he was a crook. He is about 25 and was neatly dressed in All Star shoes, a denim and sweater and his hair was shaved off. Definitely not someone I would see as a thief.”

Werner Coetzee had a similar incident. His attacker managed to open a door on the left hand side of his car where his four year-old daughter was sitting. The man fled when Mr Coetzee got out of his vehicle.

Capt. Zwane urged motorists to be vigilant when driving.

“Keep your doors locked and be aware of your surroundings when you stop at a robot.”
