Breaking News: Ecstasy worth millions seized

Ecstasy worth millions was seized on the N4 on yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon.

The bust comes after the Mpumalanga Hawks and the Crime Intelligence Unit acted on information and pulled over a courier vehicle near the Middelburg Toll Plaza.

The single cab pickup, disguised as a courier vehicle, carried two men and a cargo of black containers, with seemingly legit documents sealed in bubble-wrap envelopes inside. Only one envelope had actual documents in it. The rest of the containers were filled with ecstasy.

Whilst unpacking and counting the load, police estimated that each envelope contained at least 5 000 pills. According to a press release this morning, the estimated street value could be as high as R85 million. The pills were shaped like the animated ghosts seen in Pacman games and purple in colour.

The two suspects, a Greek and Bulgarian national, is said to have been on their way to Durban when they were intercepted. Shortly after the arrest, a team of police officials hit a house in Westville Durban. They recovered powdered chemicals, believed to be used to manufacture drugs. Another three suspects were arrested.

Gregory Craig Ayres (45) and Valeri Nikolov (41), a Bulgarian national, appeared in the Middelburg court today. Their home addresses are both listed in Durban. They face a charge of possession or use of drugs for now.

A total of 141 bags of Ecstasy was booked into the SAP 13. The drugs will be tested and the charges against them might change, pending on the outcome.

According to police, Ayres and the home owner arrested in Westville are business partners who own several clubs in the infamous Florida Road and Musgrave area in Durban.
