‘Operating illegal sex shop”
Mr Lin Chuan (24) must appear in court again on 16 September on a charge of contravening municipal by-laws.
advertised by a number of pornographic pictures. Mr Lin Chuan was formally charged with the contravention of municipal by-laws.
According to captain Khayisile Zwane, police received complaints from the community about pornographic marketing materials in Mr Chuan’s shop.
When the SAPS investigated, they found a variety of sex toys and chemical and herbal sex enhancers for both males and females.
The shop was closed following Mr Chuan’s arrest.
According to the municipality, there’s no law against adult shops, though by-laws stipulate that the business must be zoned for such purposes, following a formal application on which the council will have the final say.
The nuisance by-laws presently state: “A person may not expose or exhibit any article or thing offensive to decency, unless prior permission of the Council is obtained with regard to potentially offensive items displayed in a shop or shop window”.
It was the first arrest of its kind, and more arrests may be effected for similar transgressions by Chinese shop owners.
The Middelburg Observer visited the Sanlam Centre and found a number of shops with similar products on display.
During the visit, shop owners became very agitated with the Observer journalists who took pictures of the products.
Some of the enhancers are wrapped in packaging that depicts a variety of pornographic scenes.
Products include vaginal tightening soaps, soaps that improve blood flow to the penis for stronger erections and a wide variety of pills for lasting power.
•Dr Redge van Rensburg warned residents to rather steer clear of unknown chemical and herbal sex enhancers due to the fact that their ingredients aren’t regulated.
He says that the big problem with unregulated enhancers is, that they could harmfully interfere with medications for legitimate health problems, with which weak erections are associated.
Even scheduled and regulated erection pills like Cialis and Viagra could have disastrous consequences if not used as prescribed by a qualified doctor.
Dr Van Rensburg says men should not be ashamed to look for help from doctors, and risk secondary health problems by trying out unregulated drugs and herbs.
“My advice would be to stay away from these concoctions,” he told the Observer.
