Battle won in war against brothel
Someone with the means to do so, is finally tackling the brothel problem in Middelburg.
The Building Control Department of Steve Tshwete obtained a court order at the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court ordering Lettie Tobogo Dos Santos, the owner of 35 Meyer Street (commonly known as the ‘Silver Gate House’) to obtain a certificate of occupancy within 30 days or face further steps.
The move comes after the Building Control Department found that 35 Meyer Street is in breach of a municipal bylaw in terms of how many occupants are allowed on the premises.

In the court order, issued on 7 October, Mrs Dos Santos is ordered to apply for and obtain the certificate before 7 November. The occupancy certificate however cannot be issued because the premises has not been rezoned from a residential house to a boarding or guest house.
Further steps will be taken if Mrs Dos Santos does not comply with the court order in due time.
• It was learned from a trusted source that in August, during operation Basadi, a planned raid at the said brothel was scrapped by a senior police official moments before it was about to take place. The reason given was that a similar operation was already planned. Three months later, it is business as usual at the house.
