Video: Chaos as taxi driver resists arrest

A taxi driver who refused to be arrested by traffic wardens, and fled on foot, brought traffic to a standstill in Meyer Street on Tuesday afternoon.

The driver, who has been identified as Patrick Mahlangu (29), was pulled over after stopping next to a ‘no-stop’ sign.

According to eyewitnesses, he proceeded to bump one of the traffic wardens with his vehicle, who approached his taxi to write him a fine.

Mr Mahlangu fled on foot, with traffic officers in hot pursuit. Backup vehicles attempted to box him in at the Meyer and Beyers Naude Street intersection, but he managed to give them the slip. He was eventually trapped at the OK Grocer entrance where traffic officials arrested him with force, much to the shock of bystanders.

Even after being handcuffed, Mr Mahlangu attempted to escape again. He was eventually pushed into a combi with a traffic warden to keep him under control underway to the police station.
