Four wounded, one killed in heist

Four people, two security guards and two traffic officials were seriously wounded and one security guard killed during a cash in transit heist in Elukwatini near Badplaas.

According to sergeant Gerald Sedibe, provincial spokesperson, a Fidelity Guards vehicle was bumped by a Mercedes Benz sedan and overturned shortly after it left the Elukwatini central business district.

Robbers opened fire on the van, injuring two guards and killing the driver of the vehicle. Two traffic officers, who unknowingly came upon the scene, were also shot at. Both were seriously injured.

Information from a trusted source say that robbers fled with more than R1 million in cash.

They fled in two vehicles, a silver Mercedes and white Audi. The golden Mercedes, left behind on the scene, has been traced as a vehicle stolen in Primrose earlier this month.

The Audi and Mercedes robbers fled in were later abandoned and at least eight suspects were seen in Chrissiesmeer, getting into a taxi with number plates starting with FGB and ending with MP and the word ‘Caution’ written on the taxi.

Automatic rifles, suspectedly R4 or R5’s were used during the robbery.

Two other vehicles, a Porche and VW Amarok, believed to be involved in the heist, have also been recovered.

It is said that at least six vehicles were used during the heist with robbers abandoning cars and getting into new ones at regular intervals to avoid capture.
