Girl struck by truck on pavement

Christian Mooi Skhosana (51) appeared in court on Tuesday on a charge of culpable homicide following the death of eight-year old Shanice Hoosen on 4 July 2013.

Shanice, a Grade 2 learner of Eastdene Combined, passed away in Middelburg Hospital due to massive internal injuries after the trailer of the truck Skhosana was driving, struck her on the pavement on the corners of Meyer- and Cowen Ntuli Street.

Her mother, Zonita and brother Jayden (One), who was in his pram, narrowly escaped injury when the truck sped onto the pavement, knocking down both Shanice and the traffic light.

Skhosana was a driver for Monokoane Logistics until March this year when he was formally dismissed.

Mom Zonita and her children were waiting to cross the street when the tragedy occurred.

Skhosana failed to stop on the scene and a motorist had to speed after him and forced him to a halt.

He allegedly accelerated to beat the orange traffic light.

Shanice was rushed to hospital at around 09:30 and passed away at 10:45.

Since her passing the Hoosens haven’t received an apology or condolences from either Skhosana or Monokoane Logistics.

“We are very saddened by the company’s silence, where is the humanity?” Zonita, who took to Hellopeter.com to voice her unhappiness.

Skhosana will appear in court again on 26 September.
