18 vehicles collide in smoke

A multi vehicle pile-up caused havoc on the N4 close to Alzu on Sunday afternoon.

Poor visibility, caused by thick smoke due to nearby veld fires, led to the collisions according to police.

Eighteen vehicles and one motorcycle was involved in the crash.

ER24 said that 25 people were treated on the scene and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

There were however no fatalities and injuries varied from minor to moderate.

The highway had to be closed from 13:30 to around 15:30 to be cleared, causing traffic backups of kilometers on both sides.

The pile-up comes on the back of an horrific 65 vehicle pile-up, in a blanket of mist, at the Middelburg Toll Plaza on June 29.

Police urged motorists to travel with caution in heavy mist and smoke.
