Rising Sun TV to launch on DSTV

Rising Sun TV - A television station dedicated to Mpumalanga and based in Middelburg will launch on DSTV Channel 251 on Friday, 12 August.

It will start with just two hours a week until October off when it is assigned a full time channel on DSTV Premium.

Its content will mostly consist of news and documentaries on the province, with a vision to broadcast locally produced content across all platforms, be it drama, soapies or mini-series and even movies.

The two founders are Phillip Mogola and Timothy Zulu, who visualised the concept years ago when they worked together in the Mpumalanga Choral Music Association, and when they were still freelancers at Greater Middelburg FM.

They said in a joint statement that some of the reasons that gave birth to this concept is that Mpumalanga is very rich with culture, economic hub, wildlife, mining and general businesses. This richness needs to be sold to the nation and the world through TV media.

“Most Provinces have their own TV stations, except Mpumalanga which does not have a truly Provincial station. And most media experts (film makers) are struggling to sell their content, so a local TV platform is needed to create an economic market for them within the Province,” they said.

Rising Sun takes its name from “Mpumalanga Province”, the Province of the Rising Sun. It was decided to operate the station from Middelburg because it is fairly central to all corners of Mpumalanga (KwaMhlanga/Siyabuswa, Delmas/Nigel, Standerton/Volksrust, Mbombela). The Primary studio is based at Bambanani Medical Centre at 44 Viljoen Street, and a future satellite studio is planned for Mbombela.

“We’ve already established relationships with the CCIFSA structure (Steve Tshwete), and engaged local government through the Mayor and the Premiers Office. It’s progress for the province and there can be economical enrichment of local businesses.

We are also putting Mpumalanga on the map and this is a platform for local film makers in the industry. Our Province is rich with so many untold stories and the TV station will provide a channel to tell good Mpumalanga stories, as told by Mpumalanga people,” the statement said.

“Rising Sun TV will be fully inclusive of all races and cultures in terms of its programmes, thereby contributing to nation-building initiatives. The station will also promote educational content to all viewers especially the youth, and supporting sports, recreation and culture specified programmes on Mpumalanga”.
