Update: Bystanders tried to pull children from burning wreck

Frantic bystanders is said to have tried to pull trapped children from a burning minibus after it collided with a truck and burst into flames this afternoon.

Although some of the victims is said to have been burnt beyond recognition, authorities say that 20 people died, of which 19 is thought to be school children as well as the bus driver.

The victims are scholars from Refano Primary School and Mahlenga High School based at Sokhulumi KwaLapi Trust in Gauteng. The accident happened at around 13:00 this afternoon on the R25 (Verena and Bronkhortspruit Road) at the Wolvekop in Verena.

Seven scholars were transported to hospitals in Bronkhorstspruit and Dennilton.

Nearly 40 cars belonging to members of the media and government officials were asked to move police to take photos of the scene.
