Defense highlights alleged discrepancies in mother and son’s testimonies

Advocates Wayne Gibbs and Org Basson both alleged that the testimony of Victor Mlotshwa's mother Lonia, and that if her son shows several discrepancies.

Amongst these were that Mlotshwa claimed that he was working at the time of the offence and his mother testified that he was not.

There was also a difference between Mrs Mlotshwa’s testimony about he son’s injuries and the ones she listed during her statement.

Adv Gibbs remarked on Mrs Mlotshwa’s initial testimony that she thinks the incident happened in “the ninth month”. She later said that the date on her statement, 17 August 2017, was an estimation and that she was not sure about it.

There is a dispute between the state and the defense about the date of the incident. The state alleges that it happened on 17 August and the defense on 7 September.

Adv. Basson asked about the shopping list Mrs Mlotshwa gave her son, including wors, eight cases of Twizza, Dragon energy drinks, Simba Chips, tinned fish, candles, matches, sweets, biscuits and soup. He wanted to know how Mlotshwa was going to get everything back to Big House. Mrs Mlotshwa said they hire a car to transport the goods.

The next and last state witness to take the stand was Dr. Linda Ngoepe from the Middelburg Hospital.
She testified that she examined Mlotshwa two months after the incident, on 9 November. The date was once again noted by the defense, saying her testimony coincided with their version.

Dr. Ngoepe admitted that the medical report was not correctly completed and that she should have written alleged assault rather than assault.

She also said that Mlotshwa never mentioned scars on his back as he testified he had.

The state has concluded their case. Willem Oosthuyzen will take to the stand when the defense opens their case tomorrow.
