A ‘mashup’ of beauty and brains

What do you get when you mix a shot of beauty together with a hearty helping of brains? You get our current Mrs Mpumalanga, Mahlatse (Mash) Mokgatle of course!

Mash, as she introduced herself, was crowned as the reigning Mrs Mpumalanga on 4 November. And since the crown has found a resting place on her pretty head, she has wasted no time getting to work.

She visited the www.mobserver.co.za offices to introduce herself to the local media and reach out in partnership for future endeavours.

A busy schedule

If you listen to all that the vibrant beauty has planned during her reign as Mrs Mpumalanga, it is clear that Mash is no stranger to pulling up her sleeves, getting involved and making things happen.

As the first black winner of the beauty title, Mash has set her sights on creating unity across all races in order to address important issues effectively.

“If we want to address issues in our community, we must speak in one voice. We must work together, not against each other,” she says.

Mash Mokgatle is more than just a pretty face, and she plans on using her Mrs Mpumalanga title to change things for good.

Thus the brainy beauty queen has embarked on a road trip through the province, to see for herself the challenges that each town faces.

“I don’t want to read the stats. I want to hear problems from the people themselves. That is why I decided to go to each town and speak to the people who live there, face to face.”

Mash aims to bring issues raised by local communities under the attention of the right people by taking hands with the government, the media and local businesses.

Passionate about entrepreneurs

Being the owner of her own successful communications and media agency, Red Carpet Marketing, Mash is passionate about helping entrepreneurs to start their own businesses.

She is a registered mentor with the National Youth Development Agency and will be running several workshops to refine skills and help entrepreneurs to run profitable businesses.

“Entrepreneurship is a powerful tool to alleviate poverty and lower the current unemployment rate,” Mash says.

Help to combat child trafficking

She is also an ambassador for Child Welfare South Africa and wants to help implement plans to combat child trafficking.

“We need to change the mindset of people. This title is a platform to help me do something worthwhile. It gives me an opportunity to engage with game changers in communities throughout Mpumalanga,” Mash says.
