Mr Cornelius told www.mobserver.co.za that he was let go at the Middelburg Police Station after the SAPS could not tell him what he was charged with and that he intends on filing a claim for damages and wrongful arrest.

According to Mr Cornelius, his nightmare began while he was visiting with Mr Jorge Nunes at Kanonkop Spar, when someone informed him that law enforcement was at his bakkie.

It is suspected that someone reported the dead chickens he was transporting for his lions at Ubhetyan.

He has been purchasing chickens from the same farm for the last four years, with the permission of the Department of Health and the state veterinarian and has never encountered problems before.

Law enforcement slapped him with a R1000 fine, for his expired drivers license.

They then accused him of driving under the influence and he refused to do a breathalyzer test because his wife was driving.

They then arrested him after failing to tell him on what charges.

“They refused to loosen the handcuffs after I complained that they were too tight and I suffered injury to my arms. I also sustained more injuries after they purposefully sped over the speedbumps with me at the back of the van.”

Mr Cornelius then explained that he was locked in a cell and while he asked on which charges, the officers again failed to answer him.

He called his lawyer, Mr Danie Schutte, and was later let go.

Mr Cornelius said that on the grounds of the police failing to read him his rights, and due to the injuries he sustained during his arrest, he will be filing a claim against the Middelburg SAPS for damages and wrongful arrest.
