Department of public works impounds taxis

Five mini-buses belonging to the Middelburg and Nasaret District Taxi Association have been impounded, following the association's failure to comply with the department of public works suspension of their operating permits.

The Department’s transport inspectorate unit impounded the vehicles on Thursday.

“While the department continues to plead with the associations, strict measures will be imposed without fear or favour if the situation intensifies and becomes a threat to the pillars of the democratic rule,” the department said.

MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Ms Mohita Latchminarain, suspended the Nasaret District Taxi Association and the Middelburg District Taxi association last Tuesday after ongoing disputes about the Extension 24 and Rockdale routes.

MEC Latchminarain temporarily revoked their permits, providing alternative transport services for affected commuters.
