Dennesig North demands exceed availability

The municipality expected mass interest in Dennesig North stands, which officially went on sale on Monday, but the actual turnout “was so overwhelming,” municipal spokeswoman Ms Prudence Magutle said, that gates to the banquet hall were locked and application forms handed to the hordes through the fences.

Thousands of residents flocked to the Sydney Choma Banquet Hall from as early as 07:00, to acquire application documents for a variety of stands comprising of low, middle and high-income categories.

The application process will continue until next Friday, June 11, whereafter the shortlisting process will start.

“The data capturing process will be massive and lengthy, and details of both qualifying and disqualified applicants will be recorded,” Ms Magutle says.

Buyers must fit the list of qualifying criteria, and if they don’t, they are automatically disqualified.

Applicants must be a natural South African citizen of 18-years and above.

They must be able to pay cash only and undertake to use the property for residential purposes only.

Only one stand will be sold per applicant, including married couples.

Altogether 40% of stands are ringfenced for black, coloured and Indian procurement, who have been living in Middelburg for at least 36 months.

A total of 691 properties varying in sizes from 350m² to 900m² are available.

Qualifying buyers meeting the criteria will be entered into a raffle to ensure fairness.

The date and time of the raffle will only be announced once the qualification process has been finalised.

During last week’s council sitting, the DA urged the municipality to also open Aerorand South residential stands for sale after a previous resolution allowing one developer to buy all the stands for R100 million was rescinded, after no response from the interested developer.

The Aerorand stands are, however, earmarked for high-income development only, as they fall within the Middelburg Mall node, where a luxury hotel will be developed in the near future.

Another residential project, Rondebosch, will also avail hundreds of residential stands for mixed-housing development.

Disqualified applicants for the Dennesig North development will not be placed on the RDP housing list.

Monday’s response was so overwhelming that gates to the banquet hall were locked to avoid a stampede.
