Sangoma initiates back in class

The Mpumalanga Department of Education spokesperson, Jasper Zwane, said the two Sozama Secondary School learners who were suspended from school for undergoing sangoma initiation are back in class.

The two grade 9 pupils were suspended two weeks ago.

On Wednesday and Thursday, local sangomas picketed outside the school saying that the learners were being unfairly discriminating against.

“These learners don’t disturb classes, they wear their sangoma attire underneath their school uniform. Everyone has a right to freedom of association in South Africa,” Mr Unathi Myeni said.

Mr Zwane said department officials held a meeting on Thursday.

“The Department noted the developments at the school. Officials from the Department had a meeting with the Traditional Healers and amicably resolved the matter.”
