Panic-buying under control in Middelburg
Although residents rushed to stock up on food, fuel sales remained average.

Gerrie du Toit, owner of Engen Midwater, said that they filled their tanks in anticipation of panic buying but that all was calm.
“We experienced more of a rush with the latest price increase than we did over the past few days,” Mr Du Toit said. Jorg Nunes of Kanonkop Spar said that they had a busy two days behind them.
“On the first day I thought things could not get busier, but then the next day proved me wrong,” Mr Nunes said.
He said that food with a long shelf life, like canned goods, pasta, milk and flour were amongst the most popular items sold.
“It is actually heartbreaking because you could see that many of the people are struggling and they spent money they actually did not have,” Mr Nunes said.
He assured the community that his supply chain is still in place and that he has a high volume of stock with trucks that delivered yesterday and more trucks expected to do deliveries today.
Mr Nunes said that they have not experienced any problems because of the looting in Gauteng.
“Our franchise backed us from day one. I am lucky to be part of the Spar group,” he said.
