Ladies, its not selective hearing
We all know communication is key to a happy household, and with Women's Month finally arriving, the last thing you need is the daily frustration of communication barriers.
There is nothing more infuriating than having to ask for the same thing twice, but is it selective hearing or hearing loss?
Audiologist and speech therapist Lindi le Roux says that the Middelburg Hearing Centre is ready to celebrate our women this August by making sure that your hearing, or that of your husband, is well taken care of.
Ms Le Roux explained that research shows how women are generally found to have a greater hearing sensitivity of at least 3 decibels. For women, hearing loss generally occurs in the lower level frequencies.
How does this affect communication between the sexes? This means men are less likely to understand consonants, and women are less likely to understand vowels.
Experts have not only found that women are better listeners and communicators, but also that men are three times more likely to suffer hearing loss due to noise exposure at work and through their boisterous and manly hobbies.
That being said, what about your own hearing?
Ms Le Roux pointed out that women are also biologically prone to hearing loss, which can result in depression and cognitive impairment, should it not be treated on time.
We have all heard that the eyes are the window to the soul, but the ears are the window to the heart and heart disease is the number one killer of women and their hearing. Studies have found that the inner ear is so sensitive to blood flow that cardiovascular disease is often detected in the ears.
A common disease like osteoporosis, which is a result of a decrease in oestrogen levels, also results in the calcification of the fine bones in the inner ear.
Pregnancy, the use of contraceptives, pain killers, fluctuations in hormones and diabetes are also main causes of hearing loss in women.
But hearing loss is not a shame. Many great feminine icons, like Whoopi Goldberg, Halle Berry and Helen Keller all suffered from hearing loss.
Behind every great woman is another great woman whispering words of encouragement into her ear, so tend to your hearing health by cashing in on the Middelburg Hearing Centre’s Women’s Day special from 10 to 13 August.
