Spike victim: ‘How I escaped robber gang’

A woman has told www.mobserver.co.za of her narrow escape after she drove over spikes outside of Pretoria. She is now appealing to other victims to come forward and join hands so they can take legal action.

She asked to remain anonymous as to not alarm her family residing in Middelburg.

The woman said she had to travel to Bronkhorstspruit from Pretoria to pick up a parcel and decided to return home using the Old Bronkhorstspruit road.

Close to Hans Strydom Drive she suddenly had a flat tyre. She said that thanks to articles she read online, she immediately realised that she might have driven over spikes placed on the road intentionally.

She opted to call her insurance company whilst she kept on driving at a slow speed.

“I remained calm, so I could process what was happening at that moment. Even when I called the insurance, they were surprised at how calm I was,” the woman said.

“I was fixated on all my mirrors, checking for any movement.”

In her rearview mirror she saw a vehicle acting suspicious, approaching her, falling back and making several U-turns. Once she thought she was safe, she pulled off the road but did not exit her car.

She noticed men approaching her on foot in her rearview mirror and drove off again.

This caused the men to run back to a waiting vehicle and flee.

“I did not get out of my car until help arrived.”

The woman has appealed to other victims of spiking incidents to get in contact with her.

“Something needs to be done about this. We cannot just sit back and become victims of this evil thing,” she said. She can be contacted on 061 527 6711 and is also available on WhatsApp.
