Furious ratepayers take to the streets

Angry Mhluzi residents burnt tyres and barricaded streets last night over increased municipal tariffs.

The protests started on Monday evening after municipal officials failed to reach a consensus with residents who attended a community meeting at the Eric Jiyane Hall.

The meeting was unceremoniously ended when residents and municipal officials bumped heads.

Mayor Diphala Motsepe responded to the town’s outrage over tariff increases by scheduling several community meetings, the first five meetings did not go well.

Residents have threatened to take to the streets again today (Tuesday) if the matter is not resolved.

Municipal spokesperson, Prudence Magutle, said ratepayers are invited to attend consultation meetings where the financial department will address their concerns.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the municipality will host several meetings in different wards, all government protocols regarding Covid-19 must be adhered to.
