Mayor calls for calm – special council sitting scheduled
The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, led by Executive Mayor Cllr. Diphala Motsepe, is calling for calm following the continued unrests that have resulted in property vandalism and intimidation of law-abiding residents.
“We recognise that people have legitimate concerns and also recognize their constitutional right to protest but violence cannot be a solution.
“Acts of violence will have a long-lasting impact on the economy of our town, resulting in business disruptions and job losses.
“We have taken note of your concerns and made a resolution to engage the communities but our efforts were hindered by the unrests.
“Going forward, we will have a special council sitting on Tuesday, 24 August, to discuss and resolve the issues that concern the STLM community.
“Through our available platforms, we will thereafter give feedback to the community on the resolutions that have been taken.
“We plead with the community to work with us and refrain from causing further damage to property and from participating in criminal activities,” Municipal Manager, Adv. Bheki Khenisa, said in a press release.
