Riots break out in Hlalamnandi and Mhluzi

Hlalamnandi has been locked down and the SAPS has closed off access to the area with a blockade at the Cowen Ntuli and N11(Hendrina) intersection after violence erupted in the community.

The ongoing riots are due to outrage under residents over municipal tariff increases, and the municipality’s choice to cancel community meetings.

According to a www.mobserver.co.za journalist at the scene, Ngwako Street that leads to the Mhluzi Police Station is also barricaded by protests.

The journalist concluded that rumours of closures on Walter Sisulu- and Protea Street, as well as the area surrounding Steve Tshwete Municipality are not true and that the areas are currently peaceful.
