A bus has been set alight and is currently burning on the N11 at the Hlalamnandi turnoff. It is also reported that passing motorists are being thrown with rocks.

Reports have been received that Mandela Drive has been blocked at the Gholfsig turnoff.

Police were on their way to clear the road at the time of publishing.

Earlier Riot Police fired rubber bullets at protesters blocking the N4. At 10:30 TRAC tweeted that the N4 was once again open.

Several incidents of protests turning violent have been reported in Middelburg and Mhluzi. Last night a truck was set alight in Mhluzi.

The situation remains volatile with several businesses forced to close or working on skeleton staff after employees did not arrive for work this morning.

The protests are because of recently implemented tariff hikes with many residents saying they are simply too high to afford.
