Council to address riot crisis in emergency meeting today

Municipal Manager, Advocate Bheki Khenisa, has convened an urgent council sitting for 10:00 today, to address community demands and find solutions to quail the crippling unrest which has spread to Hendrina and Kwazamokuhle.

The meeting was called following consultations between Mayor Diphala Motsepe, opposition parties and community leaders late Thursday afternoon.

Some of the demands include the scrapping of outstanding municipal debt and allowing all residents, including landlords and homeowners with outstanding municipal debts, to be able to purchase electricity.

A cease fire was announced until after the council sitting, and workers who’ve been barricaded in by protestors since the riots started on Monday, are allowed to return to their workplaces today.

Www.mobserver.co.za will be sitting in on the virtual meeting and will update residents about resolutions, so stay tuned to Middelburg Observer social media platforms for updates.

Mayor Diphala Motsepe addressed the ongoing destruction of property, communities held at ransom by protestors and ongoing havoc on Thursday, calling for calm.

The special council was scheduled for Tuesday but was moved forward after riots broke out in Hendrina on Thursday while he was meeting with community leaders and opposition parties.
