Ten year-old gravely injured in hit-and-run

A ten-year-old was rushed to hospital after being struck by a bakkie in the street outside his grandparents’ house this morning.

Carel Minnaar (10), was struck in front of his younger brother between 11:00 and 12:00, in Joubert Street.

His grandfather, Johan, explained that he was busy in the yard with his racing pigeons when he could hear a vehicle speeding down Joubert Street from Meyer Street’s direction. According to Johan, the vehicle’s tyres were squealing.

The young boy was found laying near the wall, under the number 57. Damage was also caused to the tree as can be seen in the photo.

Carel, was hit so hard that he was flung from the street, against the wall of their neighbour’s property.

According to bystanders, the driver, who was using someone else’s vehicle, first fled the scene before being returned by the owner of the vehicle.

Carel Minnaar was rushed to Middelburg Provincial Hospital where he is receiving treatment for his injuries.
