Complex wall destroyed by ‘intoxicated’ driver

A woman is facing criminal charges after she allegedly crashed through a wall in Wes Street, before attempting to leave the scene without providing her contact details.

A resident of West End Village in Wes Street says that she heard a loud crash just after 21:00 on Saturday night. She immediately knew it was an accident, grabbed her first aid bag and ran to see if someone needed assistance.

Outside it came to light that someone had crashed through their complex wall. A driver and passenger alighted from the vehicle, seemingly unharmed.

Several witnesses were present on the scene.

The resident said the women seemed to be under the influence of alcohol. They attempted to leave the accident scene but were stopped.

She proceeded to take pictures of the scene, including alcohol, the driver and the vehicle registration number.

She claims that the woman, who was the driver, became very aggressive when she realised her photo was being taken and attempted to assault her.

The woman attempted to assault the resident when she took her photo.

“Luckily I worked in the security industry for two years, so I know how to handle myself,” the woman said.

Whilst the police were contacted and bystanders’ attention were elsewhere, the woman succeeded to drive off in the direction of Mhluzi. Police arrived moments later.

Charges of fleeing an accident scene and malicious damage to property, were laid against the driver.

Thanks to her personalised number plate, it was easy to trace her. (Her identity is known to www.mobserver.co.za but will not be published until she has been formally charged and appeared in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court).

The Toyota Fortuner had a personalised number plate.

The resident contacted Foto Security who provided security throughout the night to make sure no one enters the complex through the hole in the wall.

• The Middelburg police confirmed that a woman was arrested for drunken driving on Saturday night. The arrest was made by an officer of the Steve Tshwete Traffic Department.
