Fortuner driver: “I had no choice but to flee, but I was not drunk”
The driver of a Toyota Fortuner involved in an accident in Wes Street on Saturday night says she had no choice but to flee the accident scene.
The woman, whose identity is being withheld because she has not been formally charged, says that she was fleeing from a car that had been pestering her for several blocks when she drove into the wall.
She says she and two friends went to KFC on the corner of John Magagula-and Cowen Ntuli Street.
After she left the fast-food establishment, a car started following her and flashing its lights. She became more anxious about the car behind her when it refused to pass her vehicle after she slowed down, and instead opted to keep on following them, all the while flashing its lights.
The woman said that at the slipway from Wes Street into Bhimy Damane Street, she lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic. She then opted to hit the wall rather than hit an oncoming car.
She says she was disorientated after the accident and that she was not trying to flee the scene, but instead, move her car, and that’s when people started taking videos of her and attempted to remove her key from the ignition.

She denies eyewitness versions that she was aggressive and intoxicated.
The woman claims that she felt overwhelmed and opted to leave the accident scene because of the conduct of people at the scene.
She was forced to a halt after her tyre punctured shortly after leaving the scene. She said had police tried to follow her, she would have been found where her car was standing for almost an hour, waiting for assistance.
Her car was towed to a house in Mhluzi, whereafter, she requested the tow-truck driver to take her to the police station. She arrived at the station just over two hours after the accident occurred.
She claims that at the police station she was informed that a case had already been opened, but that there was no investigating officer assigned, so she must come back at a later stage.
She returned to the police station on the Sunday and again on the Monday. On Tuesday, she got hold of the investigating officer and stated her side of how the events unfolded.
The investigating officer, W.O. Boss Mokoena, told www.mobserver.co.za that although her friends had consumed alcohol, she had not because she was driving.
Reports that she had been arrested for drunken driving were incorrect after it came to light that police confused a different incident, where a drunken driver was arrested in Wes Street, with her accident in the media enquiry.
The woman said she had no problem discussing the damage to the wall with the owner, as she acknowledged that the accident was her fault.
