Good Samaritans hijacked at gunpoint

Hijackings are making a sudden comeback in Middelburg, with two occurring at the beginning of this week.

A man was robbed of his car at gunpoint on Tuesday night after stopping to assist “a motorist in need”.

The victim says he was driving on the Van Dyksdrift road at around 20:20 in his VW Jetta, when he approached the N4 off-ramp he noticed a vehicle was parked with its hazard lights on.

He stopped behind the vehicle and was immediately approached by a man aiming a handgun at him.

The victim was forced out of his vehicle and instructed to lie face down next to the road. He heard his car driving off and instinctively searched for his cellphone, realising that he had left it in the car.

The victim flagged down a fellow motorist who assisted him by calling the police. The motorist kindly drove the victim to his aunt’s house in Middelburg, where his statement was taken by the police.

The vehicle has not been found.

The victim escaped without injury.

• On Monday, another kind-hearted motorist, who picked up two men in Walter Sisulu Street, was also hijacked of his Avanza, valued at R50 000.

The man was driving towards Groblersdal on the N11 when the armed hitchhikers instructed him to pull off the road at Bankplaas. Hands bound with cable ties, the owner of the vehicle was instructed to get into the back seat before speeding off towards Dennilton.

The Avanza’s fuel ran out close to the Dennilton turn-off, where the hijackers and their victim waited for some hours for a henchman to bring fuel.

A while later, the man’s bindings were cut, and he was dropped off next to the road.

He phoned his mother with the help of bystanders, who in turn phoned the police. No arrests have been made, though the victim would be able to identify his assailants.
