Robbers torch car after botched CIT heist

Two burnt-out wrecks on the N11, close to the Pullenshope turnoff, bore silent testimony to the botched cash in transit heist earlier this morning.

According to information received on the scene, robbers traveling in a Mercedes sedan, attempted to ram a cash in transit van off the road between Middelburg and Hendrina.

The robbers lost control of their vehicle, and instead of hitting the cash-van, they crashed into a Honda SUV.

Eyewitnesses described how robbers doused the car with petrol and set it alight before fleeing the scene in another vehicle.

No one was seriously injured. The driver of the cash-van reported the incident at the Hendrina police station.

It is alleged that the Mercedes had been stolen somewhere in the Nkangala region.

• The incident comes on the back of last week’s cash in transit heist in Bethal, in which the robbers fled to Komati Village. The vehicle, a old model Ford Everest, used to ram the Bethal cash-van, was also set alight.
