Three guards accused of involvement in fatal shooting

Serious allegations are being levelled against a group of security guards, whose identities are known to www.mobserver.co.za but withheld pending formal charges, of having been involved in the fatal shooting of a Rietvlei Mine striker on Monday morning.

The deceased, who has not been formally identified, was killed instantly with one shotgun bullet to the chest.

Witnesses have identified three security guards contracted by SG Coal, who also responded to the strike on the Stoffberg road, with being armed with shotguns.

One of the three men is also being investigated for other threats against colleagues and mine workers, and a formal complaint has been laid against him with the Middelburg police.

According to witnesses the armed security guards pitched up with a white Quantum. The trio is also said to be travelling with knives in the vehicle.

One of the men is also accused of having stolen a rifle from cash transit services he worked for before joining the security contractors.

The mine’s own security contractor told www.mobserver.co.za that the guards contracted by Rietvlei are only armed with batons and were thus excluded from the murder investigation.

Police are aware of the accusations and say investigations are ongoing.

No arrests have been made.
