Major roads closed in Mhluzi amid protest rumours

Residents are urged to be cautious when travelling to Mhluzi due to brewing protests.

Protesters in the area have barricaded major entrances with rocks and large stones.

It is not clear what the demonstrations are about, however, messages have been circulating social media sites mobilising residents to protest against ‘corruption’. The message also states that demonstrators will head to the civic centre today at 10:00.

Solid waste workers also gathered outside the civic centre on Monday morning. Their protest action against the outsourcing of services started last Tuesday, since then rubbish has been piling up on sidewalks.

Steve Tshwete Local Municipality’s services at the civic centre have been halted since Monday (yesterday). According to a public notice issued by STLM’s communication office, services will remain suspended until its reopening on October 1.
